Skin  Cancer

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the United States. When you find a spot or mole that concerns you, it is important to consult a dermatologist as soon as possible. Early detection and diagnosis are the keys to effective skin cancer treatment.

If you are diagnosed with skin cancer, the type will generally determine your treatment plan. There are several types of skin cancer including melanoma (one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer), basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Our providers can help you detect and diagnose your skin cancer in order to create the correct treatment plan and give you the best chance for a positive outcome.

Overview of Mohs Surgery and Melanoma

Mohs Surgery is a procedure traditionally used for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. It is an inpatient procedure that is performed in one visit. Since its development in the 1930s, the procedure has been tremendously beneficial in treating these forms of cancer.

In recent years, the Mohs procedure has begun to be used as a treatment for melanoma. However, the usual first line of treatment for melanoma is the surgical removal of the biopsy confirmed cancerous spot and the area around it. Should further treatment be needed, your dermatologist will consult with you to plan your next steps.
