Melanoma

Melanoma

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the United States. Melanoma is one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer.

Most often, melanoma presents as a misshapen or black and brown mole, or appears on your skin as something that very closely resembles a mole.

When you find a spot or mole that concerns you, it is important to consult a dermatologist as soon as possible. Early detection and diagnosis are the keys to effective skin cancer treatment.

Depending on the results of the biopsy, the team at Chattanooga Skin and Cancer Clinic will work with you to form the proper treatment plan. If the area is benign, you will simply need to continue monitoring yourself and returning for yearly appointments. If the area is malignant, our physicians and staff will work with you to find out if the disease has spread or is contained to the current area. Staging and treatment will be discussed and we will walk with you throughout the process to give you the greatest chance for a positive outcome.

If you have found a spot that concerns you, or it has been more than a year since your last skin evaluation, call the Chattanooga Skin and Cancer Clinic today. Let our experts work with you to keep you and your skin as healthy as possible.

Melanoma Fast Facts

Do you know the signs of melanoma? The ABCDE checklist can help you determine if a spot may be cancerous.
  • Assymetry -- an uneven appearing mole where the size, shape, or color is not consistent over the whole area.
  • Border Irregularity -- if the mole does not have clearly defined borders, they are uneven, or oddly shaped, it could be an indication of melanoma.
  • Color -- moles that change color or moles that are not the same color throughout are a potential sign of skin cancer.
  • Diameter -- moles should be no larger than the size of a pencil eraser. Moles larger than that should be examined by your dermatologist.
  • Evolution -- a mole that changes size, shape, or color is a potential indicator of melanoma.
